Ten years ago, four households along Virginia Park Street decided to take on the abandoned house on the corner. Decades prior, it had been converted into a rooming house with 18 beds. Basement, second floor, and third floor windows had been replaced with doors opening onto a by-then rotting wooden external fire escape. The pipes had been stolen while the water was still turned on. Floors were buckled throughout. There were holes in the French tile roof, every window had to come out for restoration, and new plumbing and wiring ran just to begin making things work. Since racking up a $400k renovation mortgage to get the job done, our community has offered this home for rent and continued making improvements every year.
