About the room
Hello! We are looking for a roommate (no couples) to occupy the second bedroom in our cherished, co-op apartment in Flatbush, Brooklyn. The portions of the apartment that you will have access to total about 900 sq. feet excluding the master bedroom, which we will retain for our occupation. The apartment is colorfully painted, has loads of original, pre-war architectural details and high ceilings.
The bedroom for rent (90 sq. feet) is unfurnished, so you can furnish it as you wish. We do offer an armoire, drafting table, and office chair for your use in the shared living room, and ample closet space for storage. The rest of the apartment is shared, common space including the kitchen, bathroom, living room, and dining room, which are substantially furnished. Furnishings and amenities include a 2-year old leather sofa with chaise and ottoman, coffee table, 55“ Roku smart TV, DVD player, air conditioner in the living room, tower fans, dining table with two dining chairs, HEPA air purifier, dishwasher, microwave oven, toaster oven, water kettle, and French press.
The kitchen is stocked with cookware and cooking utensils, plates, bowls, cutlery, and baking supplies. We also have an extensive collection of tools and hardware, plant pots and gardening tools, vacuum cleaner, cleaning supplies, laundry basket, and garbage cans in almost every room. All of these items listed above are available for you to use with care and respect.
All utilities are covered, including 600mbps, high-speed Verizon internet, except for electricity. For months when you are the sole occupant in the apartment, you will fully pay the month’s electric bill. For months when we are staying in the apartment for at least 5 days, we will evenly split the month’s electric bill with you. The only other expense you will have to pay is the use of laundry machines in the building.
Our apartment is on the 4th floor of an Art Deco-inspired, pre-war co-op building. All windows face the west and we enjoy beautiful sunsets most evenings. The building has a racially mixed, age diverse, queer, and queer-welcoming cohort of residents and a full-time, live-in super who is kind and responsive to issues. The building overlooks beautiful Victorian homes across the street. Our apartment can be accessed using the stairs or elevator. The building uses a Butterfly brand app-based doorbell system. In the basement, we have a shared laundry room, trash and recycling area (including composting), donation boxes for tech and clothing, private garden/patio, and an ADA-accessible service entrance. The building has 24-hour camera surveillance in the common areas and a secure mailroom.
The building is located just two blocks away from Brooklyn College. We are a 5-min walk to a busy shopping and transit area known as Flatbush Junction (2 and 5 trains), which features stores such as Target, Foot Locker, Home Goods, Modell’s, Aldi, and Keyfood. Blink Fitness (now Pure Gym) is also located at the Junction and the local YMCA is a block north from the building. Local cuisines at the Junction include Jamaican, Indian, Salvadorian, and classic New York delis and bodegas, as well as multiple fast food options including Applebee’s, Starbucks, Popeye’s, Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, and bubble tea. We are walking distance from TD Bank, Chase, Citibank, Citizens, Northfield, Municipal Credit Union, Bank of America, and an ATM for the Actors Federal Credit Union inside McDonald’s.
We are a 10-min walk to another busy shopping and transit area known as Newkirk Plaza (Q and B trains), which features a C-Town, two Chinese supermarkets, coffee and pastry shops, and a New American restaurant.
We are also a 20-minute walk from Cortelyou Road (Q train) where many more restaurants and the historic Flatbush Food Coop are located.
About the roomies
We are a cis-male, queer Asian couple and have lived in this apartment for over 12 years. Due to work commitments, one of us has relocated out of state and the primary occupant of the apartment is a full-time artist spending 6 to 9 months of the year out of town. While we will officially be your two roommates, you will have the apartment to yourself for prolonged periods of time. We anticipate being in New York primarily for the holidays, work-related trips, and special occasions. We are seeking a roommate instead of a full sublessee because we are retaining the right to stay in the apartment when we are back in town.
Due to our long history in Flatbush, we are deeply knit into the local community. We know our neighbors, local businesses, and elected officials. We also have family in the area, as one of us is originally from Flatbush. Our neighborhood has very active community-based WhatsApp chat groups and our block in particular organizes a yearly block party for families and children.
Due to the public nature of our work, we like our privacy. When we’re in town, we will live and work based in the apartment, so discretion is preferred. As introverts/ambiverts, quiet down time is an essential part of our lifestyle. Now that we don’t live in the apartment full-time, we only ever invite family members to the apartment on special occasions.
We are big cooks and like making dishes from both of our cultural backgrounds - Korean, Chilean, Chinese, Indian, Burmese. We work normal office hours and enjoy spending our evenings watching movies, reading, and/or listening to music. While the apartment is pet friendly, we do not prefer to have a roommate with a pet.
