About the room
This listing is for one unfurnished bedroom becoming available on June 1, 2026, in a small three-bedroom Salem apartment, pending application approval via the landlord. There is no security deposit; move-in expenses are first and last months’ rent payments ($1600 total) paid via check to the landlord. One current roommate has moved out a bit early, but the new lease officially begins in June. I prefer female roommates, but am open to cis male roommates only if they are queer, or also very open to trans friends! I have lived here for five years and want this to remain a safe space and therefore do NOT tolerate racism, transphobia or homophobia, ableism, zionism, anti-science or MAGA agendas. NO exceptions, ever. We don’t all need to be best friends, but we really prefer that we are aligned on the basis of ethics so that we can live comfortably together.
Rent for the upcoming lease will be $800 a month. Utilities vary anywhere from around $85-$200 per roommate a month, depending upon the season and usage of appliances. Heating costs naturally increase in the winter and drop in the summer, while electricity may vary throughout the year with some increases in the summer if A/C units and fans are used. Heating has increased in cost in all of Massachusetts over the last couple years, sadly.
Bathroom is shared, the kitchen has a full-size fridge, oven and dishwasher, and plenty of shelving for food storage. There is street parking only, and we’re a short walk or drive to downtown Salem, but nicely away from the madness once October comes. There is a sizable, locked storage unit in the attic for each apartment for excess items you may have. It’s a small but homey apartment and we prefer that you are a person who is willing and able to contribute to keeping it clean, quiet, and habitable for all! Our new roommate should understand that the current roommates get up quite early for work and often go to bed early, so while this isn’t a monastery, and you should feel free to come and go and have friends, etc. over, it’s also very much NOT a party, loud music all night kind of environment and we wish for that to be respected.
Some furniture has gone with my previous roommate, while other items have stayed, but I’m open to things being swapped out if necessary or new things brought in! For example, the couch was secondhand from a couple sets of roommates ago and not the best, there’s no TV in the livingroom, etc, so if those are things you want to bring, all the more power to you!
One ESA cat lives here, and at this time we are seeking a roommate who does NOT have pets. No exceptions can be made, unfortunately.
Please reach out if you would like to tour the apartment so we can set up a time to do so that works for you and both of us. Serious inquiries who meet all above listed requirements only! Please tell me in detail about yourself when you send a message; I’m less likely to respond if I know nothing about you, especially if your profile has little or nothing on it! (:
Disclaimer: photos are from before I moved into the apartment, and the bedroom in the photos is the one up for grabs! All three bedrooms in the apartment are roughly the same size, and they feel bigger in person than they appear in photos (if it helps, I have a bed, nightstand, large gaming-style desk, and three sizable bookshelves in mine, past roommates have had many of those items and a dresser, etc.) so please keep that in mind!
About the roomies
You’ll have two roommates, Kate and Judy!
I (Kate) am a 33yo veterinary assistant. She/her pronouns work for me. I’m afrolatina, queer, pretty chill, and value cleanliness and a quiet atmosphere more than anything! I get up pretty early in the morning for work and work 4 days a week. When I’m not at work scaling dog’s teeth or trimming a screaming cat’s nails, I’m mostly in my room. I’m a writer, and I enjoy video games, crochet, crafting and reading. I’m a huge K-pop fan and spend time collecting merch for my favorite group of 17 years, SHINee. Most of my interests are pretty nerdy. I enjoy cooking and baking and just generally having downtime, so I’m not one to have tons of people over and really need roommates who are not into partying or overly loud evenings! Often you’ll only hear me if I’m playing Overwatch with my friends at night, in which case I might from time to time shout at the TV, haha. I’ve been living here for 5 years and have a tuxedo cat named Salt who, aside from when he’s whining for food, is very quiet. He’s a very shy, one-eyed, anxious senior cat of about 12, and does not adapt super easily to new people, so he spends the majority of his time happily asleep in my room! He’s sweet and doesn’t bite or scratch, but he will almost definitely run and hide from you if he’s out in the common areas, as he very rarely is, so don’t take offense! He’s just a one human kinda guy!
From Judy, who is also in their 30s: “A little about me, so we aren’t totally strangers…hmm. I am Cambodian and my pronouns are they/them/theirs. I am a homebody and I do make the most of my rent. I like to wind down by listening to music, watching Netflix/Crunchyroll, or playing video games, etc. I am a morning person and work an early schedule. You probably won’t hear a peep from me, late into the night. I am an introvert and quiet by nature. A contradicting fun fact: I like doing karaoke because it is always a good time. I love to hear people sing and have fun with it. Salem is a queer friendly place to be and there are so many chill spots to hang. I am a firm believer in personal space and respecting other’s boundaries. Common courtesy in a roomies situation, is key. Everybody has a right to feel comfortable in their own home.”
