About the room

ABOUT OUR APARTMENT: Our introverted, cat-friendly, LGBTQ-friendly apartment is a spacious three-bedroom unit on the top floor with south-facing windows.

We are looking for one roommate to move into our unfurnished bedroom ($702, including water and garbage) starting May 1st. The security deposit is $333 per person and application/credit check is $51 ($61 if you are applying from out-of-state). Internet comes out to about $22 per person each month, and electricity is around $45 per person every other month in summer and $70 every other month in winter.

The brown couch in the photo is staying, but the black futon is leaving, so we would have room for another couch and a couple arm chairs if you have any furniture you want to bring. There is a dining/craft table and a cat tree in the dining room, so there isn’t much room for more furniture in there.

The apartment has one bathroom with two sinks, three over-the-sink mirror-cabinets, and a full tub/shower. There is also a full-sized washer and dryer in-unit.

HOUSE CULTURE: We try to do a movie night or board game night once a week if our schedules align, but other than that we are pretty independent. Everyone has their own designated cupboards and space in the fridge and does their own cooking, unless they say everyone is invited to eat something they made.

Since both of us are currently mostly working from home and one of us gets noise-induced migraines, we generally use headphones or keep the volume low when listening to music, watching movies, or doing virtual meetings so we aren’t having to try to concentrate through someone else’s cross-chatter. The rule of thumb is that if other people can’t tune your noise out by putting on their own headphones and playing some white noise, it’s probably too loud. If we want to host a movie night or birthday party or something else potentially noisy, we give everyone a few days heads up so they can plan their schedules around that and/or take migraine medication in advance. We are hoping to find another introverted student, creative, or bookworm who also appreciates quiet environments. If you are a musician or someone who likes to play music on speakers or have the TV blaring all evening (without headphones) after work, we are not going to be a good fit. (Electric instruments that can be played with headphones are okay; electric drums are not, sorry. They’re not nearly as loud as acoustic drums, but they still involve bashing things.)

We are on a main street and on the top floor, so keeping the windows open at least part of the day is a necessity during the summer and the traffic can get a bit loud during rush hour. It’s the kind of steady, low-frequency noise that noise-cancelling headphones are really good at handling, but if you also have a noise sensitivity, you’ll want to take your personal sensory thresholds into account.

PETS:

There is one cat already living with us. We would be open to trying to introduce another cat (the lease allows 2 cats maximum), but we don’t know how Kiki will react. She might love having company; she might hate it. We would have to come to an agreement about the steps we would take to introduce them and what would happen if it wasn’t working out.

Unfortunately, the lease doesn’t allow for any other kinds of pets. Cats only, sorry to all the dogs, birds, rats, bunnies, and lizards out there.

About the roomies

ROOMATE #1 (Nathan) I’m a 33 year-old nerdy dude. Among other things, I like math, learning stuff, and board games. I’m a big ol’ coffee snob and will probably bake things at you on occasion. For now, I’m working part time while training for a career change. I spend my free time on personal projects, volunteering, and video games. I live pretty quietly but will sometimes try to talk your ear off about whatever book I’m reading.

ROOMMATE #2 (Danica) Hello! I am Danica, a 37 year-old woman. I am a writer, bookworm, and occasional board-game enthusiast. I have worked in security at universities and tech companies for over twelve years, though I am currently on medical leave recovering from an illness. When I got sick, I was about to leave on a year-long round-the-country bike tour, so I had a decent chunk of money saved up and am financially stable; I just had to spend my sabbatical doing something other than what I had planned. Right now, I am working on rebuilding my stamina after being stuck in bed for several months (a long fall from being able to bike 45 miles a day, but I’m no stranger to hard slogs), and I’m looking forward to returning to work in a few more months.

CAT “ROOMMATE” #3 (Kiki) I’m a 10 year-old tuxedo floof adopted by Nathan a couple years ago. I like treats, watching birds, sitting on rectangles, chin scritches, and acting like I want to go outside. I dislike rustling sounds, dieting, and actually going outside. I’m quite talkative, particularly when hungry but sometimes for no reason in particular.
