About the room

Hey!

My name is Ryan and there’s a big beautiful room open in my apartment, because my previous roommate of 2 years is leaving town and heading back to New Zealand.

Apartment is 3br/1 shared bathroom. Only other occupant is myself. Just down street from Myrtle/Broadway. Rent is $1285 a month, plus $150 or so for utilities. Security deposit $1285. One year lease. Move in date August 15 or Sept 1. Semi flexible on specifics. Super is very responsive, landlord is very chill and hands off.

The room for rent is big as hell (11’ x 15’) with high ceilings and a huge closet, and gets a ton of light all day. Lots of potential, plenty of room for a bed, couch, and desk, with room to spare. Electric heater in wall and AC via window unit. This is the master bedroom. I live in a smaller bedroom, and use an even smaller third room as an office. (pictures of the room are terrible because they were taken while old roommate was still in the process of moving out, apologies)

The apartment is really cool, high ceilings, pre-war touches (brick fireplace, pressed tin wall siding), hardwood floors, long granite counter in the kitchen etc. I’ve also put a lot of love into it since I’ve been here as well, built a custom bookshelf and spice rack, etc. This place also has exclusive access to a large rooftop that spans the entire building, which is awesome. A great space to relax, chill with friends and work on projects.

This place is a gem of a spot and a funky, unique alternative to the endless ocean of newly-renovated drudgery that is the North Brooklyn rental market these days.

As with all things in New York though, there are tradeoffs. Here are the downsides:

-It is noisy and hectic. The apartment is right next to the elevated JMZ train, there’s a bar in the back and a barbershop and restaurant in front. On Friday/Saturday nights the bar is going strong until late and there are usually people drinking and hanging out in the front. People are all nice, but it’s loud and there’s a lot of commotion. That being said, my former roommate and I have never had any trouble sleeping at night. Week nights are pretty chill though, and Sundays downright tranquil. Neighborhood is hectic as well. Never feels unsafe or anything, but there’s always a lot going on. If you’ve ever been to Myrtle/Broadway you know what I’m talking about. Not for the faint of heart.

-There was a small fire recently, and I’ve just moved back in after 2 months of repairs. The fundamentals have never looked better (they refinished the hardwood floors and fixed a lot of stuff), but it’s been a lift to clean up (mostly drywall dust all over everything) and I am still in the process of doing so. It’s likely this won’t be completely finished for 1-2 more weeks. Shouldn’t affect things much in the long run, but bears mentioning.

If this sounds up your alley, shoot me an email with a bit about yourself and any questions, and we can go from there. Thanks!

About the roomies

A bit about me: I’m 33 and work as a journalist. On the weekends I’m usually out and about, or sleeping off a hangover. My hobbies include softball, gardening, hiking, woodworking and reading. I like to keep the apartment clean, and have people over occasionally but not too often. I’m pretty chill and easygoing.
