About the room

You’d be moving into a very, very spacious, just-renovated 3BR/2BA brownstone-era apartment in Crown Heights two blocks from the Franklin C/S. The apartment is a duplex: bedrooms on the first floor, an entirely open floor of common space on the garden level, and full bathrooms on each floor. The living area has a decorative fireplace, as do the two large bedrooms. The kitchen is gorgeous: new appliances, TONS of space and an island with seating. Just off the kitchen, there’s an in-unit washer/dryer (though we are waiting on electric wiring for the dryer, and the landlord will comp us for laundry done at a cleaners’ across the street). There is a private backyard and a common front courtyard that we could garden. Your bedroom is 15’x12’ and comfortably fits a king-sized bed and has two enormous windows that get great light, a large closet, direct access to the full bathroom. That bathroom has a double sink vanity with lots of storage space, a shower bath, and a second door to the hallway. There are 3 steps down to the garden level and a flight of stairs to the first floor.

I plan to use the small bedroom as an office. The total rent for the apartment is $4400, and the bedroom I’m renting is has a closet and is slightly bigger than mine, I’m pricing it at $1750 and mine at $1650, and the office at $1000. The landlord has requested a max of 2 people live in the apartment, so the office is not for rent as a separate bedroom.

Move in is available any time, and no later than June 15 is preferred, with preference for June 1.

About the roomies

I’m Greg! I’m 33 and, after 2.5yrs in Seattle, I’m ready to move back to Brooklyn and reconnect with folks who value community and creativity as much as I do. I work as a software developer— sometimes at a shared office space in Brooklyn Heights, and the rest from home. I like making music, DJing, reading, doing art projects, spending time with friends, and biking around the city. In the next few years, I’d like to level up in my career, release a record, and continue to build my creative community.

I keep a really regular routine on weekdays— up by 7a, working 10a-6p, and starting my wind-down at 9:30p. On weekends, I mix it up. I might get drinks or go to a show with friends and come back late, or I might go to a daytime picnic, enjoy a quiet night in, and go to sleep early. I cook regularly and simply. It’s not a creative outlet for me. I keep my space tidy and clean, especially the kitchen (seeing cockroaches once was enough for me).

I am an extrovert and love building community. I chose this apartment because I wanted space for entertaining and bringing people together. I want the common area to be a place where people can hang out: a weekend dinner party, a friend over to cook a weeknight dinner, a few friends listening to records and talking after Friday night drinks. I have my DJ setup in the living room so we can play records and enjoy music together. I want you to feel comfortable having friends over as well, and I’d like it to be a place where our friends from out of town can crash for a few nights. It’s a big space so let’s have fun with it!

My ideal is that we would both feel comfortable inviting people over and not have to overthink it. It’s important to me that we trust each other to invite considerate people and host responsibly. I’d expect us to talk about how we want to use the space, so we don’t conflict, and give a heads-up text if we have someone popping by. Again, I would LOVE for both of us to feel comfortable and free to use the apartment as a place for the socializing we want to do!

In my experience roommate setups have worked best when we enjoy each others’ company but each have fairly independent social lives. Catching up after a long day or making dinner together sometimes, but also giving each other space for doing our own things if we want to is the right balance for me.

You

You are a thoughtful and empathetic human who asks for what you need and want. You have friends, communities, and activities that you like to do. You want a roommate who you can catch up with after a long day or make dinner together sometimes, but also respects your space. You’re excited about living with a roommate who regularly hosts kind, creative people and you’re excited to have the space for your friends to gather. You want to stay in New York for at least a year and make the space your home.

You keep common areas clear and the kitchen clean. You’re comfortable coordinating on splitting costs for utilities and shared household items. You don’t smoke often (weed or cigarettes - I stopped smoking a few years ago and don’t want any kept in the house). You don’t have a cat and don’t plan on getting one, and you are also not allergic to dogs. Having a dog is OK (I love dogs!) but they must be good with other dogs, medium to large groups of people, and music. My parents’ dog Poppy (12lbs, Westie, very, very sweet) may come to visit for a weekend every once in a while.
