About the room

Bedroom for rent in 2 bed (+loft) / 1 bath house on 1 acre property in Hockley/Tomball area – short drive to Magnolia, Waller, Tomball, Cypress. Partially furnished if needed (bed, dresser, desk, …). Looking for roommate with compatible personality and interests for negotiable term lease (month-to-month to 1 year) starting between May and August.

About the roomies

You, briefly:

Preferably under 40, but preferably over and past the party-all-the-time stage of life, whatever age that means to you.

Male or female *(see below)

Non-smoker (cigarettes) or strictly outside-only.

No pets. Outside-only dog may be OK.

Preferably single – I’m only looking for the ONE roommate. Open to discussion, but need to talk terms re: frequency of overnight guests.

Proof of three months current employment, OR willing to go month-to-month at $750 instead. No anti-vaxxers, racists, or MAGA/QANON types need apply.

Me, less briefly:

30s, male, recently moved back here and quit my job to spend time with family and to help out around the property (adjacent acre is my family home) and moved into this house – my grandparents’ – after they died.

Non-smoker. Sober but really don’t care if you are, so long as you’re not an obnoxious drunk or puking on my furniture. 420-friendly but haven’t really partaken for several years. It started giving me anxiety in my twenties and I just sort of lost the taste for it over time.

I’ve had many roommates over the years, male and female, straight, gay and lesbian, younger and older, from musicians to bakers to tattoo artists to 9-to-5 professionals to truck drivers. I can get along with just about anybody, but I’m looking for someone particularly compatible this time around. While I’m quiet and tend to keep to myself more often than not, I’d like to find somebody that I could still enjoy hanging out with from time to time.

As mentioned, I’m considering both male and female housemates, but all other things being equal, will give preference to female responses. My family (parents, sister, brother-in-law, niece and nephew) who live on the adjacent property (and own this one) are more comfortable with a female tenant, partly on account of the children next door, and roommate may need to agree to a background check. I don’t really agree with their reasoning, but given the option will attempt to respect their preference.

Interests/cultural touchstones:

I’ve been sort of a homebody lately; I spent several years saving up to enjoy some time away from wage slavery, and prefer to stay home and read, listen to music, work in the yard, watch TV, and spend too much time at my computer. When that loses its novelty I intend on starting a small work-from-home business.

I took a stab at starting a garden last summer, and am trying to make a more serious go of it this year. Roommate can expect free vegetables and eggs from the chickens we keep on the adjacent property. I’m also toying with the notion of trying some mycoculture in the future.

I’m a decent hand in the kitchen and like to cook, but rarely do since I started living alone again, as too much goes to waste. I’ll likely cook more frequently with someone else around.

Music: Tom Waits, The Mountain Goats, Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, Chopin, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Nirvana, Iggy Pop/The Stooges, Pixies, Radiohead, The Weakerthans, Daniel Johnston, Henry “Red” Allen, vaporwave, witch-house, but mostly, especially and primarily punk, folk, and folk-punk: Days N Daze/Escape From the Zoo, Mischief Brew, Leftover Crack/Choking Victim/Star Fucking Hipsters, Pat the Bunny, PUP, Misfits, The Distillers, Dirty Harry, Little Foot, Amigo the Devil, Chris Burrows/This Is a Robbery, Not Half Bad, The Menzingers. Major, major points if I won’t always feel the need to close my door when listening to obnoxious hardcore punk or wailing folk-punk singers.

Literature: Discworld/Terry Pratchett, Frank Herbert’s Dune, Greg Egan’s Subjective Cosmology Cycle, Glen Cook’s The Black Company series, Robert Anton Wilson, Robert Heinlein, Hitchhiker’s Guide/Douglas Adams, ASOIAF.

TV: It’s Always Sunny, The X-Files, Mystery Science Theater 3000, Trailer Park Boys, Twin Peaks, Letterkenny, Arcane, The Venture Bros., The Expanse, Firefly, Community, A.P. Bio, Morel Orel, People of Earth, Arrested Development, Other Space

Movies: abysmal monster/sci-fi B-movies from the 40’s-80’s, Humphrey Bogart, Jim Jarmusch, Kurosawa, The Big Lebowski, Barton Fink, Dr. Strangelove, Waking Life, eXistenz, A Dark Song. ~3,300 movies in my library, working on setting up an HTPC for it in the living room.

Games: Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls/Skyrim, Borderlands 2, The Last of Us, Grim Fandango

I’m an agnostic atheist with an (academic) interest in occult subjects. I consider myself a strong skeptic but not a physicalist/materialist, and favor analytic idealism if we’re taking guesses at the fundamental nature of reality. See: Bernardo Kastrup, Donald Hoffman, Alan Watts

I seriously dislike discussing politics, but I’m a fairly left-leaning independent with anarchist sympathies (in theory if not in practice). If you’ve somehow completely failed to notice the resurgence of fascist rhetoric and ideology among the American right, then we might not be the best match, even if politics never comes up.

I’m no neat-freak, but do try to keep things pretty tidy and maybe once a month I’ll channel my inner Danny Tanner for a day or two and deep clean some things. As long as you’re not an absolute slob in the common areas or leaving piles of dishes in the sink for weeks we’re probably cool.

If you’re still reading, tell me about yourself and why you think we’d make good roommates.
