About the room

The Broadway Chateau, as it’s known, offers a unique situation for the right person – is it you??

The Chateau is a welcoming and soothing furnished oasis on the south side of Williamsburg. It’s a super spacious 1,100-square foot loft filled with colorful décor and art, rooftop access, and a calming and welcoming atmosphere.  You’d mostly have the place to yourself, but I’ll occasionally be traveling from Vermont and staying in the 3rd bedroom for performance gigs.

The space: I’ve lived in this converted loft space for 20 years, and it is a warm, peaceful haven from the city’s hum! It’s a bright, colorful space with high ceilings, beautiful old wood floors, and lots of light and plants. I’ve also spent years meditating and doing yoga in the apartment so there’s a special energy that friends and guests always enjoy.

Your rooms: Your bedroom is a 137-square foot room with ocean-blue walls, a queen-sized bed, and two wardrobes for clothing and storage.

Your office/workspace/studio is a 110-square foot room with sunny yellow walls, a fully functional futon that can be both sofa and/or bed, a full desk and a closet/storage situation.  It’s perfectly optimized for using it for WFH, art studio, music production, or just keeping your life organized and compartmentalized.

The common areas: The common space consists of a large, open 700 square-foot area with open kitchen, dining room, living room, work area, and a mirrored open studio that’s available for stretching, dance, yoga, exercise, art projects, etc.  There’s one bathroom with a standing shower (in the past it’s been very doable to share when I’m in town!)

The unique situation: There is a 3rd bedroom which is my room.  However, I am a traveling performer and yogi and am very infrequently here. It’s not predictable when I come, but probably would stay here maximum 1 week/month (sometimes much less, maybe occasionally a little more).  So mostly you would have the place to yourself, but, sometimes we’d share :)

The building: There’s an incredible roof from which you can see Manhattan and Brooklyn and all the sky and sunsets. Coin-operated laundry in the basement should you need it. The building itself is a converted factory that has not been modernized, and the stairwell and hallways have “character,” including entertaining graffiti and old wooden floors. There is an elevator that does usually work, and a bike storage area in the basement.  This is not a fancy doorman building – you will need to appreciate the authentic Brooklyn experience :)

Heating/cooling: Please also note that the common area has a large window A/C unit as well as an old-school hardy heating unit. These are the main heating and cooling units in the space (this is an authentic converted loft!).  We generally find that the air travels into the back rooms decently, but there will be somewhat of a temperature difference.  Your office/studio is sunny so will be cozy in winter but may get somewhat warm in summer (can use the small window A/C which comes with it).  The bedroom, conversely, is shady and stays nicely cool in summer, but can get chilly in winter.  It’s great for sleeping!  But you can always use a space heater here and there if needed.  I am quite adapted to this and my various roommates, subletters, and guests over the years have all been ok with the variable temperatures, but if you’re very sensitive to cold or heat, this may not be the ideal place for you.

The location: The building is 1 block from the the Hewes stop on the JMZ and two blocks from the Broadway G train, and a 10-min walk from the Lorimer L stop.  Two stops from downtown Manhattan on the J/M or L trains, 30 minutes to midtown on the M train.  Plus you can hop around to BK and Queens using the G.  Lots of amenities such as grocery stores, coffee shops, bike shops, restaurants… it’s a fully thriving location.  We are at the back of the building, so you can definitely hear the train in the summer when the windows are open but it’s not deafening.

What I’m looking for: *Chill, responsible, light-hearted human who will enjoy their own space for the most part and yet be happy to have a easy-going artist and yogi drop in once in a while :)   *Someone who loves plants or wants to learn to!  We have a little family of thriving greenies that will need your love and care. *Someone naturally clean and organized – common areas are kept very neat for everyone to enjoy.

  • Someone with a stable, healthy lifestyle who takes care of themself.  Healthy eater, ideally vegetarian or vegan who doesn’t keep a lot of junky food around cause it helps me stay on track that way too. *Alas, no pets.     Utilities: *Electric, water, gas, and WiFi are included in the rent (when kept under a certain normal amount which we can discuss). *We have a lovely woman who comes to clean for us every 3-4 weeks, we can look into sharing this (affordable) cost accordingly.

Rental details: *First month’s rent + security (equal to the same) required up front.  *We can negotiate a several-month trial period that feels comfortable to both parties, after which we can reassess to determine if we both want to extend to a longer period.   *Please start by showing me you have read this entire description and are comfortable with everything in it, and why you’d be a good fit for the space. Your response should be lengthy and descriptive so I can have something to go on!  :) *After that we can set up a time to video chat, after which if we both want to move forward we can set up an in person showing.

About the roomies

About me: Circus performer by night, meditation practitioner by day!  I travel a lot to visit my partner in VT and a yoga center in TN, so the Chateau has become less of my main home base and more of a stopover – although NYC is still a big part of my life.  I am pretty low-key at home, do my yoga practices and workouts, errands, cook dinner, and get ready for gigs since I’m usually here for performance work.  I’d like to host the occasional dinner party with a few friends. I value creativity, empathy, wit, sass, emotional intelligence, and inclusiveness, to list a few!  She/her.
