About the room

A room is opening up in our San Rafael home Available December 1st…

A large private single-family home with spacious common areas, an incredible “chef’s kitchen,” quiet back yard, gardens, hot tub… and MORE!

We live in a beautiful 4-bedroom, 4-bath home of approx. 2,800 square feet. The house is fully furnished, with a spacious kitchen and relatively new appliances, a meditation room, and an electric fireplace.

We have a lush backyard, patio, grill, and permaculture garden, with (among other plants) rosemary, sage, basil, squash, wisteria, and many trees. We also have a chemical-free hot tub in our backyard. There’s a high wooden fence around the entire backyard, which creates complete privacy. It is truly magical.

We are located off the N. San Pedro Rd exit in San Rafael, conveniently located in a quiet neighborhood that’s just a few minutes from Hwy 101 near the Marin Civic Center. We’re tucked away at the end of a cul-de-sac.

**PETS: We have a housemate who is allergic to cats, so we cannot accept a new housemate that has non-allergenic cats. One housemate is planning to get a medium-small dog this Fall. Ideally, you come without a pet. We might consider pets on a case-by-case basis.

The Sunshine Room is available - this is a very bright spacious room at the front of the house with a detached bathroom with a sink, toilet, shower, and cabinets. There’s also a private entrance to this room that opens onto the front patio. This room has a glass door (which brings in extra sunshine!) The room has a light “driftwood” colored bureau and two matching side tables that are available to go along with the room if desired.

*NOTE: The closet was removed in this room to make it more spacious. We have a portable closet available for your use if you’d like it, or you could use a free-standing wardrobe, armoire or whatever you choose.

Rent is $1350/month for this room plus utilities (we ask for $100/month up-front to go towards utilities and then we adjust every few months as needed. In addition to utilities, tenants pay for the cleaning and upkeep of the hot tub, which is about $25-$30/mo on average). With the hot tub, a/c in the hottest times, and the central heat in the coldest, utilities can be as much as $175-$200/mo. Ideally, we are looking for someone who is wanting to create a long-term living situation, who is willing to commit for a year and possibly longer. However, we are looking for the right fit and are open to those who may be looking for a one to three-month commitment.

In addition to your bedroom, which measures approx 12’ by 14’, you’d also have use of the rest of the house and there is a small amount of storage shelf space available in the garage.

About the roomies

Your primary housemates (ranging in age from early forties to early sixties) will be Anita, Rachel, and Christopher. Anita is a writer who works full-time from home. She likes to stay very physically active — she’s an avid hiker and practices Qi Gong. Rachel has been an instructor of non-violent communication for kids, enjoys all things health and wellness, and works from home part-time. Christopher works outside the house full-time at his gardening business in SF.

We keep the house clean and beautiful and desire someone who’ll appreciate and contribute to the cleanliness and sanctity of the home. We’re thoughtful, playful, and focused on the expansion of ourselves and our work. We strongly value a joyful, relaxed, supportive, mutually beneficial, and uplifted home life. We do have a glass of wine now and then but besides that, we value sobriety and wish for a housemate with a similar lifestyle. No smoking on the property. We occasionally host gatherings in the garden with people in our “pod,” while being mindful of health protocols.

At this point given COVID-19, a lot of us are working from home! In order to maintain an atmosphere of relaxation and sanctuary for everyone, we would ask that if you work from home, you set up a primary work-space in your room and not the common areas. Our ideal housemate would be: A mature, responsible, clean, and stable individual who is down to earth, fun-loving, considerate, respectful of the common spaces, likes to keep a clean & beautiful space, and is a great communicator. We want someone who is a community-minded person, mindful of their impact, and understands how to share space well. Great if you have experience living in a shared household with shared cleaning responsibilities and are able to commit to a rotating cleaning schedule. Bonus points if you cook, like to share meals, and love to laugh as much as we do.

We enjoy sharing the occasional meal and hanging out together at times. We are looking for someone who likes living with others and enjoys contributing to a peaceful, relaxing & collaborative homelife.

More Details about this home… The house has solar electricity, and we have removed our SMART meter. In general, we are committed to doing our part to be conscious and GREEN. Also, generally, we turn off our WiFi between the hours of 12 am - 7:30 am (This could be adjusted slightly, but we do prefer it off at night). The bedroom has a working Ethernet Jack. We’ve also transformed the garage into a movement space — complete with a faux wooden floor, velvet curtains hiding the storage, and a stellar sound system. We like to dance in there 3-4 times a week and do yoga in there too. We don’t use the garage for parking, but there is plentiful street parking. There’s also a more formal dining room with a large glass table…We like to call this the craft room and use it for multiple purposes.
