I am writing to alert the community about a rental scam I recently encountered.

I viewed a room and bathroom with a person I met through this site who seemed very nice. After the walkthrough, she repeatedly contacted me requesting a $100 holding fee. Because I was interested in the location and the price, I Zelle’d her the $100 to secure the room for a June 3rd move-in date.

Upon further research, I discovered that subletting is strictly prohibited in her building as it is an income-restricted property. Although she claimed to have permission from the leasing office, I confirmed with the office directly that this was false. When I requested a refund, she stopped responding to my calls, texts, and emails, and subsequently deleted her listing.

Please be cautious if you see similar listings on other sites. I recommend never sending money upfront to hold a unit and reporting any such requests to both the platform and the property’s leasing office.
