The Location

The house is located just over the top of the Playa del Rey bluffs, looking out to the neighboring hills, and on a clear day the Getty and Westwood are visible in the distance. The surrounding neighborhood is gorgeous and lowkey, making for a nice walk past diverse architecture and landscaping. Down the hill to the east is a well-stocked corner store, classic pizza joint (Hank’s), and sandwich shop. And to the west it’s a short 5 minute walk to ocean views and 10 minutes walk to the sand. Playa del Rey’s beach is really something special — with Marina del Rey channel to the north and LAX to the south, it seriously feels like your own private stretch of coastline!

The House

The house is a classic 2 bedroom 1 bath mid century abode furnished with both new and vintage finds. It’s complete with wood floors, a large open livingroom and diningroom space, and a well-stocked kitchen for all your culinary adventures! The house hasn’t been fully renovated, so it still retains some of its original features, like built-in bedroom cabinetry and laminate countertops, but we appreciate the charm. Out back, nothing beats lounging on the huge patio under the sun during the day or the warmth of the heater at night. With a long fenced in yard with plenty of shade and citrus trees, it manages to feel rather private while still having nice views of the sunset on the palms across the hills. In true mid century style, the bedrooms are on the smaller side but the common areas are big, so this place is really all about enjoying as a whole. As an added perk, we’ve set up a makeshift darkroom in the garage for developing film and making analog wet prints! Plenty more space down there to host your art-making or projects as well. Off street parking in one of the two driveways will be available too.

The Room:

The available room is the larger and brighter of the two, at 11 ft x 11.5 ft. It gets good light in the morning and afternoon with south and west-facing windows, and is located at the back of the house across from the shared bathroom. It’s got a closet and some built in cabinets above. It’s unfurnished at present, but we do have a few miscellaneous items that we can throw in if needed. For extra storage, there is plenty of space in the garage and unfinished storage room below the house.

The Money:

The rent is $1800/month plus utilities, with a refundable security deposit of $2000 due at signing. This is a sublet, so we rent directly from the owner of the house and sublease to you. Unlike big apartment rentals that are happy to screw you over, we have always been able to return the full deposit to our housemates.

The People (and Animals!)

Your housemates will be Matt, a 30-something French guy who commutes to SF every week for work at an augmented reality startup, and Ashley, a 29 yo east coast transplant and engineer at SpaceX. We’re a couple and over the past 6 years have lived with awesome housemates in both northern and southern CA. We’re known to take a lot of weekend trips in the desert and mountains to camp and shoot film photography, which housemates have joined along on in the past. But most importantly, we love creating a warm and casual space for our friends and roommates to chill and enjoy good music, good art, good food, and of course good wine! Also included in the house are Apollo, our endlessly entertaining and loving dog, and Aspen, his silkie chicken sidekick who resides at the back of the yard in her coop (yes, they actually do hang out together!)
