About the room

Cute house on a quiet and friendly street, south of East Colfax. All of our neighbors are quiet and friendly. Several neighborhood kids play in front of the house most days. Inside: you’ll have access to all common areas:

Upstairs: living room with wood-burning fireplace/bathroom/kitchen/dining area

Basement: Living room with gas burning fireplace and projector/laundry room/bathroom/kitchen

Back Yard: Large covered patio, chiminea with grill inserts (fire pit), chicken coop, bbq grill, grassy lawn.

Outside: There is street parking in front of the house (no permit required so you can park anywhere). Down the road, a few blocks in any direction are several parks/green spaces, and a community garden that you can obtain a plot if you’d like. We are planning on landscaping the front yard next spring, so please forgive the tarps as we prepare the soil for next spring.

Location: Very close to the 10 line RTD bus, short drive/bike ride to light rail, and extremely close to Anschutz/University of Colorado/VA/Children’s hospitals. An incredibly diverse community, with many beautiful places to eat and explore (The Mango House is a crowd favorite around here). We are also only a short walk/bike ride to King Soopers and a short drive to several ethnic grocery stores if you like shopping there (Pacific Ocean Marketplace anyone?) This is the best part of town in the whole Denver area as far as I’m concerned!

The room is currently furnished with a desk, trendle bed, recliner and nightstand. We can easily remove these items if you want to bring your own.

We’re very laid back and accepting people who have traveled the world and fall in love with every new culture we come across. We understand that not everyone will share our views on everything and that’s fine. We love having discussions exploring who people are, why they think what they do, and who they want to become.

One thing to note Syria is still actively working in the Emergency Room at University Hospital and is regularly in contact with COVID positive patients. We do not wear masks around the house, but we are all healthcare professionals and understand the importance of germ theory and hygiene. We take precautions to not have unnecessary exposures, but with the COVID stuff going on, if you are uncomfortable living with someone who is that closely involved with COVID patients, please do not apply.

Lastly, a few house rules so we’re all on the same page:

  1. No drugs/smoking of any kind, including marijuana/vaping. If you wish to partake, that is totally fine, but it has to be off of the property. No exceptions. This is because Syria and Christoph are both pursuing medical licenses and we can’t have that stuff around since it is still illegal federally.

  2. As much as my wife and I love animals, we cannot have any additional pets at the house. We have two dogs we brought back with us from Iraq, and one of them is extremely fearful towards other animals. She’s the sweetest dog with adults and children, it’s just other animals she doesn’t like.

  3. You will have your own room in the northeast corner of the basement. The basement has a second bedroom that Syria lives in, and you two will share a bathroom with shower and tub, as well as your own washer/dryer in the basement. You will have access to both kitchens/bathrooms and living rooms (1 on each floor), as well as the front and back yards with the possibility of some storage in the garage if needed. We ask that you keep your food in the fridge/pantry/freezer in the basement, but are welcome to cook/eat upstairs. This just helps alleviate the “who bought what” conundrum. Although, once our chickens start laying eggs by the end of the month, you’re more than welcome to them!

  4. We like keeping our house fairly quiet because all of us are students, and Katie and I work from home. We ask that headphones be used around the house for any music/tv/phone calls during the day. No speakerphone inside the house; back, and front yards are fine. Both the upstairs and downstairs living rooms have Bluetooth enabled screens for TV/movie watching.

  5. All utilities (trash, heat, water, AC, gas, electric) and internet are included. If you want any subscription service or cable/satellite TV services, that would need to be purchased individually.

  6. we are fine if you have friends/family that want to stay the night, or even visit for a weekend. However, in the lease we state this as well, no visitors are allowed to stay for more than 2 nights without prior approval from either Katie or myself. We are renting the room to a single woman, not a couple, and not a woman who wants her boyfriend to live with her for free. Again, special circumstances are more than fine, we just need to know about them ahead of time.

  7. Finally, There is a chore sheet which I’d be happy to email you if you’d like. It’s a simple sheet with the weekly/monthly chores to keep the house clean and comfortable. We’ve taken a laissez-faire mentality toward who does what, so long as it’s all done. However we would be happy to add more structure to this if you would like. Our only expectation is that you do what you say you’re going to do.

We all look forward to meeting you, our future roommate, whoever you may be. We are a very fun, entertaining, and active house (while still being pretty quiet and relaxing) where several people have felt at home.

If you have ANY questions please feel free to reach out!

About the roomies

Katie: A Florida girl through and through, she loves surfing, the ocean, and exploring the world with her husband and their two dogs. Since moving to CO, she has fallen in love with the cold and snowy activities. She has also picked up baking and wine tasting as hobbies, and her specialty is all things sourdough. She is the creative one in the marriage. After working for the last 10 years for various hospitals, she now works from home for a marketing company. She was just recently accepted to Western Seminary and will be starting online classes this September, right after she finishes her Level 2 certification from WSET for wine.

Syria: Another Florida girl, she works as an ER Tech at the University of Colorado Hospital and is currently pursuing her nursing degree through both online and in-person classes. She is frequently either working or visiting her grandparents up in Longmont for long weekends, but also enjoys hiking, camping, volleyball, board games and trying new things while meeting new people.

Christoph: He grew up in Colorado and knows the best places to go to be alone and quiet in the mountains. Loves traveling, hiking, snowshoeing, and anything with his wife and dogs outdoors. He has picked up woodworking as a hobby, and the entire garage is basically devoted to it. He also enjoys discussing philosophy, finances, religion, and medicine. After working internationally and domestically as an EMT, he decided to pursue a dream of becoming a physician. Currently, he is pursuing a Masters of Public Health. He will be starting medical school in the fall of 2021 at Rocky Vista University in Parker, CO.

Habibti: Our girl dog who loves exploring new places and meeting new people. She’s well behaved but loves to scare the chickens in the back yard. She also has a penchant for taking naps in the sun on the deck in the middle of the summer, and “bopping” creatures she doesn’t understand on the head…even porcupines.

Quasi: After being hit by cars on two separate occasions as a stray in Iraq, we were able to rescue this sweet boy and bring him to his forever home. He is truly the best dog I have ever known and has a heart of gold as he lives life lounging around, learning how to cook when Katie bakes, and marching to the beat of his own drum.

Cinnamon, Oregano, Verty, Igloo: Our 4 hens living in the back yard. They should start producing eggs (of which you’re more than welcome to use) in the next 2-4 weeks!
